The Litter Robot

We have four cats so sometimes it seems our life revolves around kitty litter. I hate it, my husband hates it-I really don’t know if the cats even like it!

So, due to that fact, we started looking at self cleaning litter boxes to replace our “old fashioned” litter boxes.

When my husband and I were looking around for a new litter self cleaning system, we researched it all. My husband had tried a Litter Maid years earlier and hated it-the poo would get stuck in the tines and then it would quit working.

We looked at the Cat Genie (it’s like a little toilet for kitties), but then discovered a review on Amazon.com called “an expensive way to smell poo”. It was so funny, I actually cried. It was also very informative, and we decided we didn’t need to pay 300 bucks for a machine that baked our cats poo.

Then we found the Litter Robot. It was 300 dollars, as well-but got very good reviews and seemed a little less complicated. We have two cats that use the Litter Robot. One cat is scared of everything-so we were concerned whether she would even crawl into the box (it is circle shaped and kind of looks like a spaceship). However, we had no problems with her using the box. The other cat weighs in at 17 pounds and, well, he is a big cat (I think the vet called him mildly obese). We were worried he would not be able to get his fat butt in the box. But, we have never had a problem with him going into the box either.

The pros of the Litter Robot are these: it is automatic (all you do is clean the tray every could of days), isn’t smelly, is cheap to maintain (the filters are $20.00, but all you do is use regular trash bags in the tray and regular clumping litter), and it reduces the amount of litter you use.

The cons are these: it is rather big and you will need to have access to a plug. If you have a very skittish cat or a cat that weighs more than 20 pounds-it may not use the box. If you don’t change the filters every couple of months-it will start to smell a little. Last but not least, it is very difficult to clean the whole box (you have to empty the litter-and then reach in and clean the sphere-it isn’t very easy).

Overall, we have been very pleased with our Litter Robot and feel it is well worth the money. We also feel that the Litter Robot makes having cats a much more enjoyable experience!!!
